Free, open source notation software. If you think in sheet music, this is the most direct path from head to page, with playback. Desktop rather than browser, and production is not its job.
The AI-at-the-edges stack
Keep authorship, delegate labor. A voice that sings your written melody (see every real option compared), stem separation when you need a part isolated, assisted mastering at the end. Each tool handles execution; none of them writes.
The ownership kicker
The US Copyright Office is now explicit: prompting a generator does not make you the author of what comes back, however many times you reroll. Common questions
Is there a generator that keeps my melody?
Not reliably. Generators are trained to produce a whole track from a prompt, and your melody is at best an influence. If the notes matter, use singing voice synthesis for the vocal and write the track yourself.
Is Udio still worth trying?
Know what you are getting: since the Universal deal, Udio is stream-only inside its own platform. You cannot download your audio, video, or stems. Fine for play, hard to build on.
What is the cheapest way to end up with a song I own?
Write it. A free sketch tool for the composition, then spend only where you need help: a sung vocal, mixing, or mastering. Ownership comes from authorship, and authorship is the part that costs nothing.
