Best tools for writing a song from scratch in 2026

By the builder of Mozarella, a software engineer and musician. Updated September 26, 2026.

A song from scratch is five jobs: chords and shape, a melody, words, a voice to hear it, and a score or session to hand off. No tool does all five well. The best tool for each job, prices checked September 26, 2026. Mozarella is ours.

How the list was made

Only tools that leave the writing to you made the cut. Prompt generators write the song for you; they are covered in Suno alternatives for people who want to write the song. Prices come from each vendor's site as of September 26, 2026.

Chords and shape

Mozarella (ours)

Browser. Free to compose; vocals and studio export from $19 a month.

Our tool. Pick a key, drop chord and section blocks, and hear the arrangement at once, with progressions shown as Roman numerals. The other four jobs happen in the same tab: a piano roll for the melody, lyrics under the notes, a voice that sings them, and MIDI and stems out to a DAW. Try it free.

Hookpad

Browser. Standard $7.99 a month or $199 for life. Free tier plays piano only and cannot export.

Teaches why the chords work while you place them, with eighty thousand analyzed songs to learn from. The place to write when you also want to understand. Alternatives: Hookpad alternatives.

Scaler 3

Mac and Windows plugin. $99 one time.

For writers who start inside a DAW: chord detection, a thousand chord sets, Motions for melody and bass lines, and an Arrange timeline since July 2026.

Melody

Basic Pitch

Browser. Free, open source, from Spotify.

Hum into a voice memo, drop the file in, get MIDI notes back. No account. The fastest route from a tune in your head to notes on a screen.

Vochlea Dubler 2

Mac and Windows, standalone, AU, VST3. $99; Studio Kit with microphone $219.

Live voice to MIDI: sing into the mic and notes arrive in the DAW as you go. For people who write by singing and want to keep the takes.

Melody Sauce 3

Mac and Windows plugin. $99, released March 2026.

Generates eight-bar melodies over your chords in a piano roll you edit. Keep, change, or throw away; the chords stay yours.

Words

RhymeZone

Browser. Free.

Rhymes, near rhymes, synonyms, and phrases. Free since the nineties and still the fastest tab to have open.

MasterWriter

Browser. $9.95 a month or $99.95 a year, 90-day refund.

Rhymes sorted by sound type, phrases, idioms, and a word bank built for lyricists. The paid standard for writers who work in words all day.

Songwriter's Pad

Mac, Windows, iOS, Android. Free plan; Gold $12.99 a month or $79.99 a year.

A lyric editor with an AI idea generator, on every platform you own.

A voice to hear it

Mozarella

Browser. One sung take free, then premium.

Type the lyrics under the melody, pick from twenty-plus voices or a clone of yours, and the take plays inside the arrangement. The demo stage, in the same place the song was written.

Synthesizer V Studio 2

Mac and Windows. $99 editor, $149 with one voice, $79 per extra voice.

When the demo has to sound like a record. Import the MIDI, type the lyrics, shape the performance. Every option, compared: Best AI singers that follow your melody.

Cantai, inside notation

Dorico 6.2 and MuseSounds Pro for MuseScore Studio. Dorico SE free, Elements $99.99; MuseSounds Pro $19.99 a month.

New in 2026: a score with lyrics plays back sung. Enough to hear whether the words sit on the notes.

A score or a session

MuseScore Studio

Windows, macOS, Linux. Free and open source. Version 4.7.5, September 2026.

Full notation with free orchestral sounds, chord symbols with playback, and MIDI, PDF, and MusicXML export. The lead sheet and the parts, for nothing.

Flat.io

Browser, mobile. Free for fifteen scores with a logo on exports; Power $9.99 a month. Lifetime $199 until November 10, 2026, then $299.

Notation with live collaboration, so a co-writer can edit the same score. Buy the lifetime plan before the November price change if you want it.

Dorico

Windows, macOS, iPad. SE free for small ensembles; Elements $99.99.

Steinberg's engraver, with the free SE edition covering most songs. Version 6.2 (2026) added the Cantai sung playback above.

BandLab

Browser, mobile. Free studio; membership $14.99 a month.

Record the real vocal, arrange, and mix without paying. SongStarter offers three free starting ideas if the page is blank.

GarageBand

Mac, iPhone, iPad. Free. Current versions need macOS 15.6 or iOS 26.

The free recorder every Apple owner already has. Sketch on the phone, finish on the Mac, hand the project to Logic when it outgrows both.

Ableton Note

iOS. $6.99 one time. Version 2.1, August 2026.

A pocket sketch pad that opens straight into Ableton Live. Audio recording and warping arrived in 2.0, MIDI-to-audio bounce and time signatures in 2.1.

Songcraft

Browser. Free up to five songs; Pro $5 a month.

Lyrics, chord charts, and rough recordings on one shared page, with a rhyming dictionary and co-writers editing live.

Where AI fits

Suno Studio 2.0 (Premier, $30 a month) imports MIDI and generates around it; Staccato ($11.99 to $14.99 a month) continues a MIDI you upload. Both propose the next notes, and the copyright sits on the notes you wrote: Who owns a song made with AI?

Common questions

What is the cheapest complete setup?

Free, end to end: Mozarella for chords, melody, and one sung take; RhymeZone for words; MuseScore Studio for the score; BandLab or GarageBand to record the real thing.

Do I need to know music theory?

No. Hookpad teaches the function of each chord as you place it, Mozarella keeps the harmony in key and shows the Roman numerals, and Scaler suggests chords that fit. A song needs a key, a few chords, and a melody that lands on them, and these tools hold that in place.

Can I hum a melody and turn it into notes?

Yes. Basic Pitch does it free in the browser from a recording, Dubler 2 does it live from a mic, and Melodyne exports MIDI from a clean take. Sing plainly, one note at a time, and fix the rest in a piano roll.

Which tools will sing my lyrics?

Mozarella in the browser, then Synthesizer V, ACE Studio, Vocaloid, and Emvoice on the desktop. Dorico 6.2 and MuseSounds Pro for MuseScore added Cantai in 2026, so a score with lyrics can play back sung.

Where do Suno and Udio fit?

As a mood board. Suno's free tier keeps ownership of its songs and Udio still has no downloads. Neither sings your exact melody, so the writing stays with the tools above.
